Dear Friend of the Jerome Lejeune Foundation,
The Pennsylvania House passed the Down Syndrome Protection Act this week with bipartisan support 139-56! State Rep. Judy Ward summed it up nicely:
“The future has never been brighter for babies born with Down syndrome. We’ve learned too much to accept that Down syndrome citizens should be considered anything less than full members of the community. They deserve respect and the protection of our laws.” |
But the fight is not over. Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf will likely oppose the legislation once it reaches his desk.
We see this same discriminatory attitude reflected in most of the states around the country – only a handful outlaw abortion of unborn babies with Down syndrome. It is imperative that we fight to pass legislation protecting these babies. Every day, parents are pressured to abort their children with Down syndrome.
One Pennsylvania mom explains what happened the moment she gave birth to her son with Down syndrome:
“Doctors, nurses, specialists, every person that came into that room said, ‘Didn’t you have the test?’ Yes, yes I had the test. I even had one person say, ‘Was it wrong?’ So there’s the insinuation that your child shouldn’t be here – my newborn that’s in my arms… and instead of saying congratulations. That shouldn’t happen to any family.” |
It is imperative that our states protect unborn children from deadly sex, race, and disability discrimination. If you have not signed our petition asking your state representative to do so, sign the petition now.
I am thankful that many people are willing to stand for those with Down syndrome. This includes the thousands signing our petition to state legislators – thank you!
We need to work together to pass these state laws protecting the unborn with Down syndrome, to continue to change people’s perception of those with Down syndrome, and to show the value of these individuals as people worth accepting and fighting for! But we need your financial help to keep going.
Will you help us?
