The secret to happiness for couple with Down syndrome married 23 years

Maryanne and Tommy Pilling are a unique couple; they were the first couple with Down syndrome to marry in the UK. Although they faced much criticism, and some said it wouldn’t last, they have now been married for 23 years.

The secret to their happiness, they say, is to spend as much time together as possible, and to always be honest.

The two dated for eighteen months before Tommy decided to ask Maryanne’s mother, Linda, for permission to marry. Linda was very supportive, and helped him pick out a ring to propose to Maryanne.

They live independently in an apartment near Linda, and enjoy bowling, golfing, and cooking. Maryanne works at a local store, and Tommy just celebrated his 60th birthday.

Maryanne’s sister, Lindi, says that they balance each other well because Maryanne is the talkative one, while Tommy is more quiet, and that their relationship is an admirable one:

What keeps their marriage so strong is that there is never a hidden agenda. They love each other with their whole hearts and are honest with one another.

Lindi hopes that others can learn from their relationship:

Anything is possible with love and there should be no limitations for anyone, no matter what their circumstances are.

Here’s to many more years of happiness for Maryanne and Tommy!
