Children and adults with Down Syndrome face a crisis in medical care:

The Jerome Lejeune Legacy Fund provides state-of the-art medical care for children and adults with Down syndrome. When it comes to medical care, individuals in the U.S. with Down syndrome battle a troubling reality: the average medical professional is not trained to address the unique needs of people with Down syndrome, who may present signs and symptoms differently.

Doctors often have limited hands-on experience with Down syndrome and are unable to devote the time required for comprehensive consultations. Because of this, miscommunication and misdiagnosis are all too common. Patients may be misunderstood, marginalized, and even mistreated. Family members are often left with the responsibility of educating their medical professionals on how best to help their loved one with Down syndrome.

How you can help solve this problem:

The Jerome Lejeune Legacy Fund solves this problem by providing unparalleled medical care, tailored exclusively for people with Down syndrome and their families. The average medical costs for children with Down syndrome are twelve times higher than those without. They have an increased risk of health problems such as heart defects, hearing loss, obstructive sleep apnea, ear infections, eye diseases, Alzheimer’s disease, and more.

The fund will play a crucial role in supporting the first holistic medical center for children and adults with Down syndrome in the United States, modeled after and bringing expertise from the Jerome Lejeune Institute in France. Patients will receive personalized care to meet their specific needs, resulting in reassurance and confidence for them and their families.

The medical center will be located in Northern Virginia, within 20 miles of our nation’s capital. It is on track to open in 2020, or as soon as $600,000 in initial funding is raised.

Why Jerome Lejeune – the doctor who discovered the cause of Down syndrome:

Dr. Jerome Lejeune was a geneticist and pediatrician who discovered the cause of Down syndrome, and one of the greatest humanitarians of the 20th century. The Jerome Lejeune Foundation USA is committed to carrying on his vision and supporting individuals with Down syndrome through care, research, and advocacy.

In 1958, Dr. Lejeune became the first person to discover a link between an intellectual disability and a chromosomal abnormality. He subsequently opened the way to cytogenetics and modern genetics as we know them. A few years after his passing, his family and friends founded the Jerome Lejeune Institute in 1998 in Paris, France, the world’s first specialized consultation center to provide medical care for patients with Down syndrome and intellectual disabilities of genetic origin. Today the institute provides care to thousands of French and European patients annually.
