People with Down syndrome – an endangered species?

The Canadian Down Syndrome Society has a new campaign bringing awareness to the discrimination faced by individuals with Down syndrome. It features young people with Down syndrome dressed as different animals, and compares the situation of those with Down syndrome to endangered species.

Because of the increasing prevalence of genetic screening, babies with Down syndrome are being aborted in greater and greater numbers. For those who survive, there is often a lack of the educational resources they need to thrive. Additionally, adults with Down syndrome often face employment discrimination, with 65% of adults with Down syndrome unemployed, making it difficult for them to be independent and find housing.

The campaign also brings attention to that fact that, in North America, animal welfare organizations receive 90% more funding and resources than Down syndrome organizations. There is a need to bring attention to the struggles faced by those with Down syndrome, and help ensure that they are equipped to succeed:

Jobs are scarce, and our population is shrinking. We have to fight for education. We need support, like all these animals. They make the world a more beautiful place, and so do we.
