Dear Friend of the Jerome Lejeune Foundation,
I’d like to make you aware of a disturbing development that affects the Down syndrome community worldwide. The United Nations Human Rights Committee, specifically member Ben Achour, is advocating for abortion of unborn children with Down syndrome.
At the drafting of the committee’s official interpretation of the right to life, Achour was recorded as saying, in essence, that giving birth to a child with Down syndrome should be avoided at all costs:
“If you tell a woman ‘Your child has Dow… what is it called? Down syndrome, dawn syndrome – if you tell her that, isn’t it, or that he may have a handicap forever, for the rest of his life, you should make this woman… it should be possible for her to resort to abortion to avoid the handicap as a preventive measure.” He later followed up with the statement, “we must do everything we can to avoid disabilities.” |
Mr. Achour directly targeted people with Down syndrome in his speech. This is shameful to hear from an international committee whose very purpose is to protect the rights of all humans!
That is why we have drafted a petition to demand an apology and reversal of statements from Mr. Ben Achour and the United Nations Human Rights Committee.
The right to life of each individual should be protected- especially the most vulnerable, who have no voice to speak for themselves. Speak for them. Join us now in affirming the dignity and right to life of people with Down syndrome – and all individuals – by demanding an apology from Mr. Achour and the United Nations Human Rights Committee!
Sincerely,
