Heidi Crowter defies common stereotypes about individuals with Down syndrome. At 23 years old, she has a job, lives independently, and is in a happy relationship with her boyfriend, James.
Liz, Heidi’s mother, is proud of her daughter’s accomplishments:
I think to move into your own flat, age 20, is amazing. I’m very proud that you do all your own shopping and housework.
Heidi loves her job as an assistant at a local hair salon, and believes that her boyfriend is the best boyfriend in the world. But she struggles when people judge her for having Down syndrome:
It makes me feel like I’ve got no value in life. But I do. Like that bearded lady said in Greatest Showman, “This is me. Take me as I am.”
